Broken egg – No New Chick – all is well!!

Some of you may have noticed the partial egg shell in the nest box. No new chick. The egg cracked open due to being rolled around so much. We were able to review video to see that there was yolk visible. This means that there was no development of a chick in side the egg. It appears that Astrid consumed what she could of the contents. The contents would be a good source of protein for her. You may see her or the chicks pick at or eat the shell. This is fine too!! The shell is a good source of calcium.

The other egg may remain in the box and eventually get pushed to the side but the same thing could possibly happen to that egg as well. We cannot predict what will happen but will post something here and on our website if anything changes.

Both chicks are doing well!! If you happen to see a small bloody spot on the smaller chick it is OK! A piece of the last meal got stuck in his down (white fuzz) and Astrid picked it out as best she could but it left a small bloody spot on his shoulder area.

No Worries – all is well!!
