Astrid spent another chilly night hunkered down on her eggs. Ares came to the box at 4:30 AM but his mate didn’t want to leave. He was back at 5:40 and at that time she was ready to switch. After that she was out of camera view until about 8:00 when she showed up on a steeple perch. Ares alerted us to her arrival with subtle chirp calls. The next changeover occurred at 8:24 when Astrid took over. Ares was on the State Building after that and then at 10:30 he was seen making hunting forays from the steeple. She called out when he landed at the State Building at 10:50. They switched again at 11:37 and Ares came in to take his shift. Astrid went over to the State Building.
At 12:25 PM Ares was calling from the box. He was giving the loud chirping alarm call which meant there was a falcon intruder in the canyon. He got off the eggs and left the box. Astrid came in about a minute later to resume incubation. He was back from his adventure sometime before 1:04. A couple of switches happened in a short amount of time – we are not sure why, but at 1:30, Astrid was at the nest, forcefully requesting a turn on the eggs. She got her wish and Ares flew out of the box. He was seen on the State Building a few times in the midafternoon – he was probably hunting. He came to the box at 3:22 and they switched. She was on the State Building for a while after that but an hour later she was out of view. At 4:30 he was giving light chirping calls as if he had her in view, but we couldn’t locate her with the cams. She finally showed up at the crossperch at 5:30. She had a large crop so evidently, she had enjoyed a good meal. As it happened her visit to the box was just a check in and she flew over to a steeple perch. The final switch of the day took place at 5:56. Astrid was home for the night. Rain was falling steadily by this time and we assume that Ares went to a night perch. Goodnight falcons.
