Friday, April 10 – Winter Returns to the Canyon

Astrid stayed tight on the eggs overnight. It was a true winter night with plenty of snow squalls. Intermittent snow showers and a biting wind continued through the day. Ares arrived on the State Building sometime before 5:15 AM. He brought food to the box at 6:11. Astrid flew off with it, thus giving Ares his first turn on the eggs for the day. The next switch happened at 7:39, and then Astrid was back incubating. Following that changeover, Ares was out of our view until 11:45 when he showed up on the north face of the State Building. He came and left a few times from the same perch. Astrid called each time he flew into her sight. She seemed eager to get out of the box and stretch her wings. He finally came to the nest at 12:39 PM, and they switched. She had been on the eggs for five hours straight.
Astrid was out of view of the cams until 2:42 when she showed up on the State Building. At 3:30 she was on the hotel ledge feeding on prey. It was large and may have been a Pigeon. We weren’t completely sure about the prey since the camera was being buffeted by the wind and we didn’t have a clear view. She was back to relieve Ares at 4:42. Following that he spent a little time on the State Building and then was out of our view. He probably took a perch somewhere out of the wind. As early as it was, it seemed the falcons were set for the night. Astrid called at 6:11 which probably meant that Ares was flying by – maybe returning from hunting. Goodnight all.
