It was yet another cold and snowy night and Astrid spent it tight on her eggs. She began calling for Ares to relieve her at 5:45 AM. He showed up five minutes later and the pair switched. We didn’t see where she went after leaving, but he chirped for a while, so he probably had her in view. He announced her arrival on the State Building at 6:10. The next changing of the guard took place at 8:47 and then Astrid was back on the nest. Snow Squalls were hitting the downtown area intermittently through the morning. There were also some breaks of sun, but the wind stayed cold.
Astrid was chirping from the nest at 12:08. We didn’t know if she was calling because of an intruder or calling for Ares to relieve her. She seemed to be very upset. He showed up on a State Building ledge a couple of minutes later. He didn’t come to relieve her until 12:46. It was a fast switch – she was eager to leave. After being out of view, her landing on a State Building perch was announced by Ares at just before 1 PM. The next switch took place at 1:48. Ares was next observed on the State Building at 3:19. He changed perches on the building at least once before returning to the nest at 5:03 and taking over incubation duties. She went to the State Building and landed on the same ledge that he had just vacated (they do that a lot).
At 7:20 PM Astrid was feeding on the hotel. We don’t know if she caught something herself or if she drew something out of Ares’ pantry. It looked to be a good-sized meal. She landed on the crossperch at 7:37 but it was only a fast check in. She left Ares on the eggs. She was back for another check at 7:51 but again, she flew back to the State Building. She was intent on staying out late. They finally switched at 7:57 PM and Astrid was in place for the night. Goodnight all.
