Thursday night/early Friday morning was wet and cool. Astrid remained on the eggs until the switch-out at 6:20 AM. It was a quick changeover. At 9:15 Astrid did some flying around the State Building, perhaps she was checking Ares’ pantry. At 9:56, they did another quick switch and Astrid was back on the eggs. At 10:55 Astrid gave a cackle-type alarm call from the nest. Ares was up and maybe he was checking out the intruder. We think it unlikely it was another falcon based on the type of alarm call. It was probably another species of raptor.
Ares next came to the box at 12:10 PM, but Astrid was not interested in leaving and he didn’t try to coax her. They did a quick switch at 12:58 and Ares got his turn. Rain was falling and Astrid spent some time perched on the State Building. Rainy days are not her favorite. When she returned to the box at 3:34, he didn’t want to leave, so she more or less evicted him. She pushed up behind him and got him up and out. Perhaps he took offence because he didn’t return to relieve her again for the rest of the day. She earned herself a marathon session on the eggs. She was there into the night. Ares was last seen on the State Building in the early evening. Goodnight falcons and all.
