The Peregrine chicks are now left alone in the nest for long periods of time. But you can be sure that at least one parent keeps a close eye on the nest box at all times – most often from a perch on a nearby building. Yesterday the chicks moved themselves to the far corner of the box where all 3 stayed huddled close together. The afternoon sun was intense and that corner was the shadiest place to be, but now a day later they still remain in the same spot. The parents haven’t tried to move them, nor have they attempted to move the sterile egg. At least 2 feedings took place this morning that I know of. The fare for the 2nd feeding was a Black-billed Cuckoo. Obviously this bird was not caught in the City. Prey like the cuckoo and other non-urban songbirds tells us that during this nesting season the falcons are relying on every bit of their extended hunting territory. The territory of a pair of Peregrines is normally 3 to 5 miles.
am trying to ‘figure’ the Utica view from the camera’s perspective.
At night there are 2 bright lights (like on towers) in the distance, towards the far left, one tower has a flashing light and there are some bright lights (cluster ) near the ground below these lights -> what is the Utica location of these towers?
I’m not sure. Roughly that view is of the west. That means we are seeing West Utica, Whitesboro and possibly some of New Hartford. I suppose WIBX might be in the line of sight. You can check it on Google Earth.
looking at the map, Whitesboro is to the NW of Elizabeth street
where on the roof is the nest (E. st side or Genesee street), looked up bank addy then used birds eye view and also looked up an aerial photo to better see the roof
WIBX, I think has red lights
these lights are bright white with the further light on flash and almost immediately below are a gang of white lights closer to the ground (?the ball field near Burrstone? and arterial)
have background in wildlife, aerial photography,
taught as a child to read street maps
have you seen the Rachel Cason Bldg in Harrisburg PA _ nest up there ~15th floor, chicks born in late April, a set of 4 (2 f 2m) this site is equipped with sound too, 3 cams on a cycle (bldg. at 400 Market Street) special falcon site (will send link later)
Annie
The box is on a ledge on the 15th floor facing Elizabeth Street. I haven’t seen the Harrisburg falcons. We hope to have more cameras and sound too, but we need to raise the funds for that. This is the very first season for our project.
where is the 15th fl? is it among the pair of window (sets of 2) or the multiple single windows going across, below the roof line?
(some how I pictured the box up on the roof, not below the roof line)
It’s the top floor just below the roof line. Note the pillars between the single windows and the ledge beneath.
